Nestled within an extinct volcanic crater in the Bedugul highlands, Handara Golf & Resort is one of Southeast Asia's most spectacular golf courses. Located 1 hour from Ubud and 2 hours from Nusa Dua, the scenic drive climbs past traditional Balinese villages and rice fields. Sitting at 1,142 meters (3,750 feet) above sea level, the course enjoys a crisp, refreshing mountain climate with temperatures ranging between 14°C and 20°C.

Course Layout & Strategic Highlights

Designed by Australian legends Peter Thomson and Michael Wolveridge in 1974, this 18-hole championship layout features mature tree-lined fairways, native flora, and premium Bentgrass greens.

• 3rd Hole (Par 4, 435 yards): A steep downhill tee shot to a sharp 90-degree right dogleg. A protective creek prevents players from cutting the corner, demanding strict driving accuracy before a long-iron approach over water.

• 7th Hole (Par 4, 375 yards): An uphill, dogleg-left layout lined beautifully on both sides by vibrant orange-flowering trees.

• 14th Hole (Par 3, 203 yards): The iconic signature hole, requiring a long shot to an uphill green framed by a massive mountain backdrop.

• 18th Hole (Par 5, 560 yards): A dramatic finisher that plays downhill off the tee, then climbs back uphill toward the clubhouse. Navigating the fairway bunkers opens a great opportunity for birdie.

Practice Facilities & Amenities

The club features extensive warm-up areas, including a 300-yard driving range, three putting greens, a chipping area, and practice bunkers.

Traveler's Advisory: The on-site clubhouse is quite dated but contains an adequate Japanese restaurant. For a more local dining experience, several Indonesian restaurants sit just 10 minutes away overlooking Lake Bedugul. The on-site hotel bungalows and villas are in need of major renovations and are generally not recommended.

Despite the aging infrastructure, Handara remains an absolute must-play for its exotic natural setting and uniquely cool playing conditions.
